Biography
Dr. Patrick Aerts (title: advisor Strategic Alliances at the Netherlands eScience Center) maintains two platforms: ePLAN at the national level -as secretary- and PLAN-E at the European level -as chairman-. These platforms are concerned with matters of common (eScience) interest. At DANS (title: senior research fellow) he is responsible for the harmonization of Research Data Management Planning requirements (national and European) and for Software Sustainability. Employed by NWO, (the Dutch funding organization) since 1990 he was until 2012 director of the National Computing Facilities Foundation, responsible for the national high-end computer infrastructure. In that capacity he was strongly involved in the origins of PRACE (for HPC) and EGI (for the grid). His original background is in relativistic quantum chemistry in which he got his PhD in 1986 on the development of the first proven working program to solve the equations of motion of electrons in molecules with heavy nuclei.
