SUMMARY:Purpose-Built HPC: Last Hope for Earth System Prediction?
DESCRIPTION:Birds of a Feather\nApplications, Tech Program Reg Pass, Exhib
its Reg Pass, Exhibits - Exhibit Hall Only Reg Pass\n\nPurpose-Built HPC:
Last Hope for Earth System Prediction?\n\nMcCarren, Govett\n\nAs earth sys
tem prediction models continue to increase in complexity, so do the high-p
erformance computing (HPC) requirements for running these models. Unfortun
ately, current HPC platforms are designed, built and optimized for a broad
array of computationally intensive applications which results in them bei
ng inefficient for earth system prediction applications. Specifically, rec
ent top HPC platforms are mostly optimized for machine learning, artificia
l intelligence, and n-body simulations. They are not designed with the spe
cific purpose of solving partial differential equations (PDEs), such as th
e Navier-Stokes equations, which are the foundation of earth system modeli
 ng.
